Quick start: your first edit and first upsell

Two things get you the most value fastest: letting customers fix their own orders, and showing an offer after they buy. This takes about fifteen minutes. Work through it in order — the last step is the one that makes any of it visible to customers.

What you'll set up

  1. Order editing — customers change items, fix addresses, and cancel, without emailing you
  2. One upsell offer — a product suggestion after checkout

Both need the same final step: adding the app block.

Before you start

  • Account Editor is installed. See Install Account Editor.
  • You've chosen a plan or started the free trial
  • You can edit your checkout and customer account pages in Shopify

Part 1 — Let customers edit their orders

Step 1. Set your editing window

  1. Go to Settings → Editing window.
  2. Under Default window, open How long orders stay editable.
  3. Pick 60 minutes to start with.
  4. Select Save.

Sixty minutes catches most mistakes — customers usually notice within a few minutes of buying. You can change it later.

Editing always stops once an order is fulfilled, whatever you pick. A customer can never change an order that has shipped.

Step 2. Choose what customers can change

  1. Go to Features → Item edits and refunds.
  2. Turn on the actions you're comfortable with. Increase quantity, Decrease quantity and Remove items are a safe start.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Go to Features → Address and shipping edits and turn it on.

Address editing is the one with the biggest payoff. A wrong address means a failed delivery, a return leg, and usually a refund.

Start narrow. You can always allow more later; taking something away after customers have used it is harder.

Step 3. Decide whether to hold orders

Still on Settings → Editing window, find Order processing:

  • Hold orders — You ship quickly, and a box could be packed while someone is still editing
  • Don't hold orders — You ship slowly enough that the window closes first

Hold orders delays every order by the length of your window. With 60 minutes, nothing ships for an hour.

Part 2 — Add your first upsell

  1. Go to Upsell and select Create offer.
  2. Surface — choose Thank you page. It's the highest-attention moment you get.
  3. Setup — name the offer, write a headline, and pick the products to show.
  4. Targeting — choose Everyone for your first offer.
  5. Incentive — add a small discount, or none at all.
  6. Review — select Publish offer.

Keep the first one simple. One offer to everyone tells you whether customers respond at all. See Create an upsell offer.

Part 3 — Make it visible

Nothing above is live yet. Settings give Account Editor permission to run. The app block puts it on the page.

  1. Go to Features. A banner at the top names any block you're missing.
  2. Select Add app block. Shopify's editor opens.
  3. In the Apps panel, find Account Editor and add the Order editing block.
  4. Select Save.
  5. Repeat for the Upsell block, on the Thank you page.

Check your dashboard. When the setup guide says "Account Editor is live", customers can use it.

Check it works

Go to Features and select Preview order page. This draws the page from your real settings, so you can see exactly what customers get without placing an order.

Then place one real test order and edit it yourself. It's the only way to be sure end to end.

Good to know

Everything ships off. A fresh install does nothing until you turn features on.

The app block is the step people skip. Every setting can be right and customers still see nothing. If something looks broken, check this first.

Tell customers the window exists. Most never look at their order page again. Adding the edit deadline to your order confirmation email is the biggest single thing you can do to get the feature used — see Show the edit deadline in your order confirmation email.

An offer only runs where its block is. An offer set to the Thank you page needs the Upsell block on that page. Both have to match.

FAQ

How long does this take?

About fifteen minutes. Setting the window and features takes five, the upsell takes five, and adding the blocks takes another five.

What if I only want one of the two?

Do Part 1. Order editing is the reason most stores install the app, and it works on its own.

Will this change my existing orders?

No. Settings apply to orders placed after you save them. Test with a new order.

Can I try it without customers seeing it?

Yes. Settings → General → Testing mode limits the app to customers you choose, so you can try it on a live store.

What if I allow too much?

Turn it off again in Features. Changes take effect immediately for new orders.
