Add Account Editor to the checkout page
Five Account Editor blocks run at checkout — offers, a survey, shipping rules and discount validation. Most need Shopify Plus, because Shopify only lets apps add blocks to checkout on that plan. If you're not on Plus, use the Thank you page and the Order status page instead. You lose very little.
What this does
Everywhere else, Account Editor fixes things after the fact. At checkout it can stop the problem happening. You can hide a delivery option you can't honour, or check a discount code before it applies.
That is why Shopify limits checkout blocks to Plus.
What you can put here
- Shipping rules — What it does: Hide or block delivery options that don't suit the order — Needs Plus: Yes
- Discount validation — What it does: Check a discount code against your own rules before it applies — Needs Plus: Yes
- Upsell — What it does: A product offer during checkout — Needs Plus: Yes
- Free shipping upsell — What it does: An offer to reach free shipping, shown with the delivery options — Needs Plus: Yes
- Post-purchase survey — What it does: A short survey at checkout — Needs Plus: Yes
Before you start
- Your store is on Shopify Plus. Without it these blocks can't be added.
- You can edit your checkout in Shopify.
How to add a block
- In Account Editor, go to Features.
- Select Add app block. Shopify's editor opens.
- Switch to the Checkout page.
- In the Apps panel, find Account Editor and add the block.
- Select Save.
Shipping rules do more than show a message
Shipping rules are the most useful thing here. They remove delivery options, rather than just warning about them.
A rule can do one of four things:
- Hide all delivery methods
- Hide named methods
- Allow only named methods
- Block shipping changes, with a message you write
You choose when it applies. Conditions include order amount, order tags, product tags, customer tags, country, city and shipping method.
Say you can't do next-day delivery to remote postcodes. A rule hides that option for those addresses. The customer never picks it, so you never have to cancel. See Let customers change their shipping method.
Checking discount codes
Discount validation checks a code against your own rules before checkout accepts it. It runs after Shopify has worked out its own reductions.
Use it to stop codes being stacked, or used on products you didn't intend. Shopify's own discount settings cover the common cases, so add this only when you need a rule Shopify can't express.
What your customers see
Nothing extra, unless a rule or an offer applies.
Shipping rules work by removing options. Customers just see a shorter list. They are not told why, and nothing looks broken to them. If you chose to block changes, they see the message you wrote.
Good to know
Without Plus, you lose very little. Order editing, cancellations, returns, invoices and offers all work on every plan. Checkout blocks only add rules during checkout itself.
Shipping rules need two parts. The rule is set in Account Editor, and the checkout block enforces it. A rule with no block on the page has nothing to act on.
Checkout changes affect every order. A rule that is too broad hides delivery options from customers you never meant to catch, and they will not tell you. Add one rule. Watch it for a day. Then add the next.
Troubleshooting
- The block won't add — Why: Your store isn't on Shopify Plus — Fix: Use the Thank you or Order status page
- A shipping rule does nothing — Why: The checkout block isn't added — Fix: Add Shipping rules to the checkout page
- Too many delivery options are hidden — Why: A rule matches more orders than intended — Fix: Narrow its conditions, or turn it off and re-test
- A checkout upsell doesn't show — Why: The Upsell block isn't on the checkout page — Fix: Offers only run where their block is
- Rules apply in the wrong order — Why: Rules run by priority — Fix: Reorder them in Account Editor
FAQ
Do I need Shopify Plus to use Account Editor?
No. Only the checkout blocks need Plus. Everything else — order editing, cancellations, returns, invoices, offers after checkout — works on every Shopify plan.
What am I missing without Plus?
Rules that apply during checkout: hiding delivery options, validating discount codes, and offers shown at checkout. You can still do all of that after checkout.
Can I hide a delivery option without Plus?
Not at checkout. You can still control what customers change afterwards using shipping rules on the Order status page.
Will a checkout block slow checkout down?
No. They run alongside the page and don't hold up payment.
