Translate what customers see
Account Editor is already translated, so customers see it in their own language. Turn languages on under Features → Languages. You can also reword any line to match how you write. One warning first: moving to a lower plan turns extra languages off and deletes your text edits.
What this does
A customer who cannot read the edit options will not use them. They email you instead, in their own language, and you are back where you started.
Turn a language on
- Go to Features → Languages.
- Find the language and set it to Active.
- Save.
Customers now see that language when their browser or store locale matches.
Your plan limits how many can be active at once. The page tells you how many you have.
Reword any line
Every line customers see can be changed.
- Open a language.
- Use Search to find the text. It searches both the label and the words customers read.
- Select the edit icon, change the Text customers see, and save.
The table shows the label, the text, the language, its code and its status.
Search by what customers read, not by internal names. Searching for the phrase on screen is faster than guessing a key.
Translating cancellation reasons
Cancellation reasons are translated here too. Search for cr to find them.
Good to know
Downgrading deletes your text edits. This is the one to remember. Moving to a lower plan turns off any languages beyond the new limit and deletes the wording you changed. Upgrading again does not bring it back. On the Free plan you are reset to English only.
If you have spent time on wording, keep a copy of it somewhere before changing plans.
Editing text may not be in your plan. Turning languages on and rewording them are separate permissions. The page shows a banner if rewording is not included.
Translations are already written. You do not have to translate anything to support another language — just turn it on. Rewording is for matching your tone, not for filling gaps.
Your emails follow separately. Account Editor's emails have their own language settings under Features → Emails.
Troubleshooting
- Customers see English anyway — Why: The language is inactive, or their locale does not match — Fix: Set it Active and check your Shopify market settings
- A language will not turn on — Why: You are at your plan's limit — Fix: Turn another off, or upgrade
- The edit icon does nothing — Why: Rewording is not in your plan — Fix: Check the banner, then Pricing
- Text edits vanished — Why: You moved to a lower plan — Fix: Expected, and not recoverable. Re-enter them.
- Cancellation reasons are untranslated — Why: They are separate entries — Fix: Search for cr in the language
- A search finds nothing — Why: You searched an internal name — Fix: Search the words customers actually see
FAQ
Do I have to translate anything myself?
No. All eight languages ship translated. Turn one on and it works. Rewording is optional.
What happens to my edits if I downgrade?
They are deleted, along with any languages past the new limit. Upgrading does not restore them. Keep a copy before you change plans.
How does Account Editor choose a language?
It follows the customer's browser and your store's locale settings. Turning a language on makes it available; Shopify decides who sees it.
Can I use a language Shopify does not support?
No. Languages have to line up with your store's setup.
Do translations cover emails too?
Emails have their own settings under Features → Emails, including a language for staff notifications.
