Replace Items

Replace Items lets customers replace a product in their order with a completely different product.

**This is different from Swap, which only changes the variant of the same product. Replace allows the customer to choose an entirely different item instead.

This is useful when a customer wants a different product, not just another size, color, or variant of the same one. **

How to Enable Replace Items

To enable this feature:

1. Go to Edits → Item Edits
2. Under Order item options, check Replace items
3. Click Save

Once enabled, customers will see a Replace option next to eligible items in their order.

When they click it, a product selection modal will open so they can search for and choose a replacement product.

Limit Replacements to a Specific Collection

You can restrict replacement choices to products from one Shopify collection.

This helps you control which items customers are allowed to replace with. For example, you may want to allow replacements only from a collection like Replacement Eligible.

How to set it up

1. Enable Limit to a specific collection
2. Click Select collection
3. Choose the collection from the Shopify collection picker
4. Click Save

Only products from the selected collection will appear in the replacement modal.

If you want to update it later, click Change collection and select a new one.

Note: If collection limiting is enabled but no collection is selected, you will see this validation error: Please select a collection.

How Replace Items Works

When a customer replaces an item:

• the replacement product is added using the same quantity as the original item
• products that are already in the order are excluded from the replacement picker
• unavailable products are hidden
• products with exclusion tags are hidden
• shipping methods are recalculated after the replacement

This helps keep replacements valid and prevents customers from selecting products that should not be available.

Replace vs Swap

It is important to understand the difference between these two options:

Swap

• changes the variant of the same product
• example: changing a shirt from Medium to Large

Replace

• changes the product entirely
• example: replacing a T-shirt with a Hoodie

Use Swap when customers should only be able to change variant options. Use Replace when you want to allow switching to a different product.
