Overview


This article answers the most common questions merchants have when setting up or testing upsell offers in Account Editor.

If your offer isn’t appearing, applying discounts, or behaving as expected, use this guide to quickly find the cause and solution.



🧩 General FAQs


Note: Checkout page upsells are only available for Shopify Plus merchants. Shopify restricts checkout extensions to Plus stores only.


1. Why isn’t my upsell showing on the storefront?


Check these points in order:

✅ The Upsell Block is added to your theme (Checkout / Thank You / Order Status).

✅ The offer status is set to Active.

✅ You’ve selected at least one surface under Display Surface.

✅ The conditions under Smart Targeting & Rules are being met (e.g., order amount ≥ $50).

2. My offer shows in admin but not for customers — why?


If an upsell doesn’t appear live:


  • The conditions may not match the order (e.g., incorrect product tag).
  • The editing window has expired (timer or post-purchase edits disabled).
  • The app block was added on a different page template (e.g., Thank You page instead of Order Status).


🧠 Pro Tip: Always place a test order using the same steps as your customers to verify visibility.



3. Can I run multiple upsell offers at once?


Yes — you can create multiple offers, but only one appears per surface at a time.

Use priority order (1, 2, 3) under the Surfaces tab to control which one shows first.



4. How do discounts apply to upsell products?


Account Editor automatically generates and applies discounts during checkout.

No manual code creation is needed.


If the discount isn’t applying:


  • Ensure the Discount & Pricing slider is not set to 0 %.
  • Verify that the upsell item isn’t already discounted via another Shopify promotion.



5. Can I show different upsells by country or region?


Yes.

Use Market Targeting to choose specific markets (e.g., US, UK, Australia).

Account Editor automatically adjusts currency and tax for each region.



6. What happens if a customer adds an upsell after checkout?


When accepted, the product is added directly to the existing Shopify order — no duplicate order is created.

Order totals, shipping rates, and taxes update automatically.


🧠 Pro Tip: Upsell edits are fully compatible with Account Editor’s order editing analytics, so all added items are tracked.



7. Can upsells work alongside other apps?


Yes — Account Editor’s upsells integrate seamlessly with Shopify Checkout Extensibility and most fulfillment or analytics apps.

However, avoid running overlapping post-purchase apps that also modify checkout pages, as they may override widget visibility.



⚙️ Troubleshooting Guide


Offer not showing after activation


Possible Cause

How to Fix

Offer still Inactive

Go to Offers → Toggle to “Active.”

Block missing on theme page

Add Upsell Block in Online Store › Customize Theme.

Conditions not met

Temporarily relax Smart Targeting rules and test again.

Timer expired

Reset urgency timer to longer duration or disable temporarily.



Upsell discount not applied


Cause

Solution

Discount slider set to 0 %

Increase percentage and Save.

Shopify discount conflicts

Remove overlapping auto-discounts.

Currency mismatch

Verify Market Targeting currency settings.



Urgency timer not showing


Cause

Solution

Timer toggle OFF

Turn on Activate urgency timer.

Timer longer than edit window

Shorten to fit within allowed edit window.

Hidden expired message

Add expiry message or leave field blank to hide widget.



Upsell not visible in certain regions


Cause

Solution

Market not included

Add missing countries in Market Targeting.

Localization settings off

Re-sync Shopify Markets with Account Editor.

Store not using Shopify Markets

Leave Market Targeting blank to apply globally.



🧠 Advanced Tips


  • A/B Testing: Use the A/B Testing tab to compare performance between two versions of the same upsell (different discount, button, or product).
  • Analytics: Check the Analytics tab to see which surfaces and offers drive the most revenue.
  • Chained Upsells: Enable Consider upsell items for other offers to trigger secondary offers after an item is added.
  • Tag Logic: Combine Smart Targeting conditions with Shopify tags (e.g., Customer tag = VIP).

Common Setup Workflow


  1. Create new upsell offer.
  2. Add Offer Details (name).
  3. Configure Market Targeting.
  4. Select Display Surfaces (where it will appear).
  5. Set Discount & Pricing.
  6. Apply Smart Targeting & Rules.
  7. Choose Product Modules.
  8. Add Urgency Timer (optional).
  9. Customize Action Button.
  10. Add Upsell Block to your Shopify theme → Save → Test.


Once this setup is complete, your upsells will be live and fully automated across the selected pages.
