# Let customers change custom item details

Personalised items carry details customers get wrong — a name spelled wrong, the wrong date, a photo they meant to replace. Turn this on under **Features → Custom item details** and they can fix it after checkout, on the Thank you page and the Order status page.

## What this does

A typo in an engraving is invisible until the item arrives. By then the only remedy is making it again.

Letting customers check their own text before production is far cheaper than a remake.

## Turn it on

1. Go to **Features → Custom item details**.
2. Turn on **Turn on custom item details**.
3. Build your form under **Field configuration**.
4. Save.

## Build the form

Two ways to start:

**Quick start templates** add common fields in one click. Apply one, then adjust.

**Custom fields** you build yourself. Each field needs:

* **Field name** — What the customer sees
* **Field key** — The internal name. At least 3 characters, and unique.
* **Field type** — **Text** or **Image**

Use **Image** for anything customers upload — a photo for a print, a logo for engraving.

## Good to know

**Deleting a field does not erase what was collected.** Customers stop being asked for it, and values already on past orders stay. The change applies when you save.

**Personalised items usually go into production early.** That is the reason to pair this with a restriction — see below.

**Block edits once production starts.** Under **Settings → Editing restrictions**, **Block edits on items with custom details** locks these items. Name specific field keys, or leave it empty to block every item that has details.

That may sound contradictory next to this feature, and it is the right combination: let customers fix details during your editing window, then lock them when the work begins.

**Field keys must be unique.** The app rejects a duplicate, because two fields sharing a key would overwrite each other.

## Troubleshooting

* **No custom details on the order** — Why: The feature is off, or no fields configured — Fix: Check both
* **A field will not save** — Why: The name or key is missing, too short, or duplicated — Fix: Keys need 3+ characters and must be unique
* **Customers cannot edit their engraving** — Why: A restriction is blocking items with custom details — Fix: Check **Settings → Editing restrictions**
* **Old orders lost their values** — Why: They did not — deleting a field only stops future collection — Fix: Past values remain
* **Customers cannot upload a photo** — Why: The field type is Text — Fix: Change it to Image
* **Changes arrive after production** — Why: Your editing window is longer than your lead time — Fix: Shorten the window, or block these items sooner

## FAQ

### What can customers change?

Whatever fields you set up — engraving text, a gift message, a date, an uploaded image. You decide.

### What happens if I delete a field?

Customers stop being asked for it. Values already collected on past orders are kept.

### Can I stop edits once production starts?

Yes. **Block edits on items with custom details** under **Settings → Editing restrictions** locks them. Use both settings together.

### Does this work with my personalisation app?

It manages its own fields. If another app already collects personalisation, check they do not overlap before turning this on.

### Can customers upload images?

Yes, with a field of type **Image**.
