Display Surface

What “Display Surface” Means


A surface is the moment in the customer journey where an upsell appears.

In Account Editor, every offer can show on one or more of these key touchpoints:


  • Checkout page → Before payment, when shoppers are already engaged.
  • After checkout → Right after payment, perfect for impulse cross-sells.
  • Thank You page → Immediately after purchase, ideal for bundles and add-ons.

Order Status page → When customers return to track orders — great for repeat purchases.

Note: Checkout page upsells are only available for Shopify Plus merchants. Shopify restricts checkout extensions to Plus stores only.


Why Surfaces Matter


Each surface serves a different psychological moment in the buyer journey.

Using more than one surface gives multiple chances to convert — without spamming customers.



Step-by-Step Setup


1️⃣ Open the Display Surface Panel


In your Upsell Offer creation page, find the Display Surface section.

If you haven’t chosen any surface yet, you’ll see “No surface selected.”



2️⃣ Click Select Surface


This opens a window listing all available surfaces. You can activate one or several at once.



3️⃣ Pick Your Surfaces


Tick the checkbox for each surface you want to use. You can mix and match depending on campaign goals.

Promote small add-ons during purchase

Checkout + After Checkout

Encourage re-orders

Thank You + Order Status

Seasonal limited offer

Thank You only


When done, click Apply or Done. Your selected surfaces will appear under Applied Surface.




An offer won’t visibly appear on your storefront until the corresponding Upsell Block is added inside your Shopify theme editor.


To add it:


  1. Go to Online Store › Customize Theme.
  2. Open the surface page (e.g., Thank You page).
  3. Click Add App Block › Account Editor › Upsell Block.
  4. Click Save.

🧠 Tip: If you activate multiple surfaces but forget to add blocks for them, your offer will remain invisible to customers.



How Offer Priority Works


Each surface manages its own list of offers.


  • Drag offers to reorder priority (1 = highest).
  • Only one upsell is shown at a time per surface to avoid clutter.

Analytics data helps you identify which surface converts best.

Real-World Example


A home-decor store creates two offers:

Checkout page: “Add a Candle for 15 % Off.”

Thank You page: “Bundle Throw Pillow + Blanket.”


Customers see the candle upsell right before payment and the bundle offer immediately after checkout — capturing both impulse and post-purchase interest.



Common Mistakes to Avoid


❌ Selecting surfaces but forgetting to add Upsell Blocks in Shopify theme.

❌ Using the same offer on all four surfaces without adjusting copy or products.

✅ Use data from Analytics to find which surface delivers best ROI and focus there.
