Creating Your First Upsell Offer
What This Page Does
The Create New Upsell Offer screen is where you define what to promote, where customers see it, and why they’ll want it.
Every field here shapes one complete upsell journey — from product selection to discount logic and timing.

Step-by-Step Setup
1. Offer Details → Name Your Offer
Give your offer a short, descriptive name that helps you identify it later in Analytics or A/B Testing.
Example: Winter Gear Add-On or VIP Bundle 10 % Off.
🧠 Tip: Keep names under 20 characters and include the product type or target audience for clarity.
2. Market Targeting → Choose Regions
Show the offer only in selected Shopify Markets.
Click Add › Select Markets to open a country list, then tick one or more regions.
How it works:
- Shopify automatically handles currency + tax differences.
Leaving it blank makes the offer global.
📸 : “Select Markets dialog with country checkboxes.”
💡 Use case: Promote ‘Free Shipping on Orders $50+’ only for US and Canada.
3. Display Surface → Decide Where It Appears
Click Select Surface to choose when customers see this upsell in their journey.
Surface | When It Shows | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Checkout page | Before payment | Small add-ons or upgrades |
After checkout | Between payment & confirmation | Impulse cross-sells |
Thank You page | Immediately after purchase | Repeat buys or bundles |
Order Status page | Whenever customer views order | Follow-up offers for returning buyers |
📸 : “Choose where customers will see this offer modal.”
🧠 Tip: Make sure the Upsell Block is added to each selected page in your Shopify theme editor; otherwise, the offer won’t render.
4. Discount & Pricing → Set Your Incentive
Use the slider to set a discount from 0 to 100 %.
Strategy | When to Use |
|---|---|
No discount | Premium products or limited editions |
10–15 % | Balanced conversion vs margin |
20 % + | Clearance or seasonal sales |
📸 : “Discount slider with 12 % selected and discount strategy tip.”
💡 Pro Tip: A 10–12 % discount often hits the ‘sweet spot’ for most brands — noticeable but profitable.
5. Smart Targeting & Rules → Control Who Sees It
Fine-tune your audience and conditions.
- Exposure limits: Restrict offers per order or per customer.
- Upsell options: Allow edits to upsell items after purchase.
- Eligibility: Target Everyone, Specific customers, or Saved segments.
Conditions: Trigger only when rules match (e.g., Order amount ≥ $50).
📸 : “Smart Targeting panel with example rules.”
🧠 Tip: Use conditions to avoid overexposing discounts to low-value orders.
6. Schedule & Priority → Time Your Campaign
Choose a start and optional end date for seasonal or limited-time offers.
If two offers overlap on one surface, the offer higher in priority appears first.
📸 : “Date picker fields and priority indicator.”
💡 Example: Activate ‘Holiday Gift Bundle’ from Nov 15 – Dec 31 only.
7. Product Modules → Pick What to Show
Each module controls how products appear inside the upsell widget.
Module | Purpose |
|---|---|
Single Product | Promote one specific item |
Group Products | Display a bundle or collection |
Recent Product | Auto-suggest based on recent views |
Abandoned Checkouts | Re-engage customers with past cart items |
Drag modules to reorder priority.
📸 : “Product Modules list with Add buttons and drag handles.”
8. Urgency Timer → Create FOMO
Turn on the toggle to show a countdown that encourages faster decisions.
Configure:
- Time limit (e.g., 60 minutes)
- Display style → Digital Clock or Progress Bar
- Banner message with
{{countdown_timer}}variable
Expiry message shown after time runs out
📸 : “Urgency Timer panel with Digital Clock preview.”
🧠 Tip: Always set the timer shorter than your order edit window to avoid confusion.
9. Action Button → Set Your Call to Action
Customize the button that finalizes the offer.
Options:
- Type your own label or choose a preset (e.g., Buy Now, Get This Deal, Yes, I want this).
Short, active phrases lift conversions by 15–25 %.
📸 : “Action Button panel with Quick Presets and Pro Tip note.”
💡 Pro Tip: Match the button tone to your brand voice — playful for DTC brands, direct for B2B stores.
Review & Activate
- Double-check all settings.
- Click Save.
- Switch the offer status from Inactive to Active.
Preview on each selected surface to ensure it loads correctly.
📸 : “Offer status toggle and Save button highlighted.”
